Apparently those little dangling BALLS on the back of trucks could result in a fine soon. The Daily Press’ article on this is severely lacking in the word BALLS so I figured I’d say it enough times to make up for their omission. Balls balls balls!

BALLS.

In driving on January 4, 2008 at 3:22 pmThe Daily Press reported in this article that Virginia state government is trying to pass a bill that would make text messaging while driving illegal. I think it’s a smart move, because I will admit that there are a few times when I have been driving and texting and have noticed myself swerving a little bit, but caught myself before anything bad came of it.
Many of my friends have mastered the art of texting without looking at what they’re doing, much like it’s standard to learn how to type on a computer keyboard without having to look at it. I don’t see the harm in texting if you’re not even looking at the phone, but I guess every chance the government has in removing the possibility for a mistake to be made and someone being hurt from it, they’ll take. Personally, I don’t think a law will stop people from doing it, though, especially the current teenage generation – phones are mobile IM devices and too ingrained into their daily lives to be able to give them up that easily.
I wonder if texting while stopped at a red light would still be illegal, if this law were to be passed. I’m curious as to other’s opinions on this issue. Do you text while driving?
Virginia car inspections
In driving on December 19, 2007 at 5:35 pmI recently read this article from the Daily Press regarding an idea Governor Kaine has proposed for car inspections. Rather than requiring cars to be inspected every year, he wants to change that to every two years. Raising the cost from $16 to $20 they say will save us $12 over the two-year course, but they are also wanting to up the cost of renewing a drivers license.
It’s interesting the way society progresses. In recent years, James City County has stopped requiring county decals on cars. Now the state wants to require inspections every two years. I believe this is a good move, to simplify our lives just a little bit. Granted, it’s all because of the budget that these things are being recommended, so it all still stems back to government’s involvement in our lives… but it’s nice to see that the government still thinks of its citizens!
