In my opinion, this is quite a shame. The county schools, police, and government all support the requested light and slower school speed limit, but the state does not. What will it take to get the state to agree with the county and it’s residents? After driving through that intersection myself, I agree that even before the schools were open, a traffic light would be a major boon there. Only time will tell if the extra turn lanes and grading will help.

Enjoy a wonderful variety of bluegrass, old time, and swing music with The Runaway String Band in a free concert at the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St., on Saturday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. The Runaway String Band, made up of four long-time Williamsburg-area musicians, uses lush vocal harmonies and hot instrumentals to provide audiences with a taste of American music from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, and includes some contemporary pieces as well.

The program is being offered free of charge as part of the library’s Centennial Celebration Series, made possible by Lee and Betty Ann Griffin, marking 100 years of public library service in Williamsburg. Toys R Us, the national toy-store chain, is opening a small store in New Town soon.

The company will be opening a Toys R Us Express in the spot where PacSun used to be on Main Street, according to New Town leasing agent Nathan Shor.

The popular retail toy company opened their new line of smaller “Holiday Express” temporary stores in 2009 to capture the holiday market by offering a limited selection of popular toys inside malls and shopping centers through the season. The idea was popular enough that the chain has kept the idea and dropped “holiday” from the name.

Shor did not offer a date when the location would open or whether the store will be open only for a short while.
James City county planning staff recently approved a permit for the Toys R Us sign.

American keen to make most of Brit pub closures

Business venture could see US pub kitted out with furniture from UK

An American businessman is looking to take advantage of pub closures in the UK by salvaging goods to create his own traditional pub.

While up to 50 pubs are closing every week in the UK Greg Pedersen is keen to open a British style pub in Williamsburg, Virginia – a town founded in 1607 with what he describes as “bags of English heritage”.

And to make it as authentic as possible he wants licensees on this side of the pond to help him furnish the pub.

He said: “The bar and most of all the fixtures will be from an original English pub. I envision an old English phone booth out front or maybe even functioning as the entrance to the pub.

“I want the menu to include predominantly British fare, yards and half yards of ale, darts and a piano player for nightly sing-a-longs.”

The pub is set to open up in the next 12 months in the New Town development of Williamsburg but as yet the pub does not have a name – something else Pedersen is looking for help with.

“I’d also like interesting signage and a suggested name would be great, especially if it has old unique signage to accompany it,” he said.

Pedersen’s runs his own marketing company and part owned golf business Nevada Bob’s but has never previously worked in pubs.

Despite this he is confident his venture will not go the way of the Brit pubs he is hoping helps to furnish the venue.

“I have read a lot in the press about pubs closing left right and centre in your part of the world. That is unfortunate but it may give me and my partner an opportunity to pick up some interesting stuff from the prior owners to use over here.

“Although the business climate is really tough here like it is everywhere, I think if you create something special or offer people an experience they won’t find anywhere else then you have a better chance of success.”
