New Virginia Laws starting July 1st

In Uncategorized on June 30, 2009 at 2:16 pm

WYDaily has a great article summarizing many new laws that will take effect tomorrow, July 1st. There are two that I find of particular note: banning smoking in restaurants and bars, and banning text messaging while driving. Read the article to find out what changes may apply to you!

BALLS.

Apparently those little dangling BALLS on the back of trucks could result in a fine soon. The Daily Press’ article on this is severely lacking in the word BALLS so I figured I’d say it enough times to make up for their omission. Balls balls balls! :D

Texting + Driving = No

The Daily Press reported in this article that Virginia state government is trying to pass a bill that would make text messaging while driving illegal. I think it’s a smart move, because I will admit that there are a few times when I have been driving and texting and have noticed myself swerving a little bit, but caught myself before anything bad came of it.

Many of my friends have mastered the art of texting without looking at what they’re doing, much like it’s standard to learn how to type on a computer keyboard without having to look at it. I don’t see the harm in texting if you’re not even looking at the phone, but I guess every chance the government has in removing the possibility for a mistake to be made and someone being hurt from it, they’ll take. Personally, I don’t think a law will stop people from doing it, though, especially the current teenage generation – phones are mobile IM devices and too ingrained into their daily lives to be able to give them up that easily.

I wonder if texting while stopped at a red light would still be illegal, if this law were to be passed. I’m curious as to other’s opinions on this issue. Do you text while driving?
